Abel Joshua Luera (AJ) passed away on August 4, 2020, in Odessa, Texas.
Funeral Services will be at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home with Minister Steve Lawhone officiating. Face Masks Are Required as is Responsible Social Distancing. Due to COVID-19, we are asking that you limit yourself when paying condolences to the family due to any possible underlying medical conditions.
AJ was born in Odessa, Texas to parents Abel and Melissa Luera on September 1, 1991. He met his wife Thia Murphy in 2005 when they were just high schoolers; they have been together for 12 years, raising 8-year-old son, Connor and 2-year-old son, Logan.
AJ was a dedicated and loving husband, father, son, grandson, great-grandson, brother, and uncle.
He is survived by his wife, Thia Murphy; two sons, Connor Luera and Logan Luera; father and mother, Abel and Melissa Luera; sister, Morghan Hernandez; brother-in-law, Christopher Hernandez; nephew, Sylas; niece, Indie; grandparents, great grandmother, tios, tias , cousins, and many extended family members.
AJ was a talented, funny, loving and hardworking man. He loved deeply, and with his whole heart, and that was especially true when it came to his two beautiful boys. A caring man who would sit down with you if you looked like you were down on your luck, he somehow would put a smile on your face even if you had never known him a day in your life.
His love of music was as infectious as his radiant smile! Everyone who knew AJ will have more than a few memories of him whipping out that guitar and lighting up the room with his beautiful voice or by strumming a tune. There was not one day that went by that he didn't pick up that guitar and play any song that he had an itch to play. Forever will we all be reminded of him when the strings of an acoustic are strummed, and forever will he live on in the songs he graced this world with, in the short time he was here. It wasn't only the guitar that AJ played, he just had a natural talent that poured out of him. It seemed like no matter what instrument he picked up; he could just easily figure out how to play it.
Lives are often built with the outlook that both parents will always be there for their children, unfortunately fate doesn't always allow that to happen. What feels like something so incredibly permanent one day can easily be gone the next. Worlds are shattered with someone's departure. Connor and Logan are surrounded by people that love them as they move forward in life; these people will keep AJ's memory alive with memories photos, music, fun, games and love.
AJ touched the lives of many and to lose him is an absolute shock and tragedy that will affect us all forever. The pain of losing AJ is so real, and the agony dealing with the reality of him being gone, the countless unanswered questions, are just a few things the entire family will feel for a lifetime.
Although AJ no longer stands next to us in this world, he will always be here in our hearts and our spirits to give us that extra little push to say what needs to be said, and to do what needs to be done. No matter how dark the night is, how long the road is, or how difficult the battle, we will face it with having the strength of God's will, the gentleness of AJ's heart, and the generosity of AJ's soul.
AJ Luera was quite simply, a beautiful human.
The family of AJ Luera wishes to extend our sincere thanks to our family & numerous friends that have supported us through this difficult time.
