Big Al Rutledge, 62 of Odessa died Monday, December 31, 2007 at his home. He was born November 9, 1945 in Lamesa, Texas to Allwyn Conrad and Addie Bess Garrett Rutledge. He left Lamesa High School in the 12th grade to enlist in the US Air Force. Al served 18 months in Vietnam. Al worked for himself in his transmission shop, Big Als Transmission. He also worked with United Industries and Dale Meyer Trucking. Big Al was a member of the American Legion and the DAV, member of the Sandyland and Erath Antique Tractor Puller Association. Al was a member of the Nevaeh Hopes Fellowship Church and Alcoholics Anonymous for 22 years. Al has joined his parents and his son Tommy in heaven with many friends and family members.
Survivors include his wife Shirley Hoy Rutledge whom he married in Odessa on September 24, 1988. His daughter Colleen Jean Murphy and son Brian Canady and his wife Tammy. His three grandchildren; Briana, Bradly and Samantha. His brother Robert Rutledge and his wife Judy of Blanchard, OK.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Friday, January 4, 2008 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Laurie Roehl of Nevaeh Hopes Fellowship Church will be officiating. The family request that those attending the funeral do so in Racing Attire. Burial with full military honors will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
Visitation with family and friends will be 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
