Alma Jane Hewett, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away on Saturday, February 19, at Home Hospice, in the loving arms of her husband Hugh, surrounded by many others who also loved her.
Alma was born in Coleman, Texas, on June 6, 1934, to Lonia Missouri Watkins and Jesse James Watkins, the second of three daughters. She married Hugh Andrew Hewett in Monahans on April 25, 1953. They shared 58 happy years together and raised two daughters, Della and Holly.
Alma, a graduate of Monahans High School, began her working career as a Licensed Vocational Nurse at the newly opened Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. After her children were older, she began working as an optician at Lee Optical. She later joined Patio Opticians, which she eventually purchased keeping her many faithful customers in glasses and contacts.
Alma was a lifelong Methodist, a past member of Highland UMC and St. Lukes UMC and most recently a member of Resurrection United Methodist Church. She had been active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and the PTA during her childrens school years. She enjoyed hosting large family gatherings, vegetable gardening, needlework, word puzzles, and genealogy. She was a proud Texan and even authored a book on Texas trivia.
She and Hugh lived in Iran for two years while Hugh was working in the oil industry. In later years, they enjoyed travelling to reunions of Hughs Korean War unit.
Alma is survived by her husband Hugh, daughter Della Brown and husband Bill Brown of Herndon, VA, daughter Holly Hewett of Odessa, grandsons Andrew and Eric Brown, and sister Juanita Dodson, as well as Hughs sister and five brothers and numerous other relatives. She was preceded in death by her sister Marie Ford and her parents.
Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, February 22, at 10:00 AM.
