Amalia Flores

July 11, 1946 — June 22, 2018

Amalia Flores, 71, of Alpine, departed from this world on June 22nd in Odessa, Texas.

Visitation will be from 6-8 on Monday, June 25th at Sunset Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at First United Pentecostal Church with Pastor Terry Pugh officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, arrangements are by Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Amalia was born in Alpine, Texas to Faustino "Tino" and Feliciana "Chana" Flores on July 11, 1946. A lifelong learner, Amalia started school in Alpine at Centennial School and went on to graduate from Alpine High School in 1966. Amalia's mother having never been able to read or write, she urged all of her children to go to school and the result of that was a family full of teachers and nurses. Amalia was both of those. She graduated from Sul Ross in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science and from nursing school in 1969 as an LVN. Always wearing the white nursing uniform, she worked in various hospitals and nursing homes in both Alpine and Odessa, with the majority of her time here at Medical Center Hospital, until she went to work for ECISD. From 1987-2007, Amalia worked selflessly and with much love as a Pre-K, Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade bilingual teacher at Fannin, Lamar, Murry Fly, Cavazos, Goliad, and Burleson Elementary Schools. Her classrooms were well known for both the structure and love with which everything was taught. She loved to teach more than anything and taught her students to embrace the fact that because they knew more than one language they were special, not less than. During her time at ECISD she received many accolades including recognition for high APRENDA scores and even a few appearances in the Odessa American for her classroom decorations.
Amalia was not only a wonderful teacher to her students and friends, but also the best mother that one could ask for. Her children came 2nd only to the Lord, Jesus Christ and everything that she did, she did with her children and grandchildren in mind.

Amalia is preceded in death by her grandmother Tomasa Vasquez, parents, Faustino and Feliciana Flores, sister, Patricia Flores, aunt, Luz Gonzales and numerous other relatives.

Amalia is survived by her spouse Richard Garlets, Sr. of Howe, Indiana; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Flores of Odessa, Texas; son and daughter in law, Patrick John Flores, Kilah Jae Flores, and grandsons Timothy Bo Patrick, Tate Josiah Flores of Andrews, Texas; sons Bryan Hitchcock, Richard Garlets, Jr., Darrin Hitchcock and brother Cayetano Flores.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the Midland Hospice staff as well as any who assisted in the care of our beloved mother, Amalia Flores. She will be missed. She is at peace now, having fought a valiant fight.
