Avery E. Smith passed away peacefully Sunday, February 10, 2019 at the age of 93. Avery's life was characterized with hard work, determination and a strong faith in Christ.
Avery was born August 12, 1925 in Pottsville, Texas. He had an incredible work ethic from a very early age. As a boy and young man, he worked to run his family farm as well as helping with odd jobs that were needed by neighboring farms.
He joined the United States Army in 1944, where he served in the Philippians and Japan during World War II. He earned the "Bronze Star" and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
After leaving the Army, Avery returned to Hamilton, Texas, where he continued to help with his family farm. He met and married the love of his life, Lenora. They lived together inseparably for 71 years. Soon after, they moved to the Panhandle and finally settled in Odessa.
Avery and Lenora raised two children in Odessa, a son Avery Lee and a daughter, Peggy. Avery began working as a welder at Sivals Tanks. Later, he worked with a close friend "Dugan" to open his own welding shop, A.E. Smith Welding. He ran this successful business until he retired in 1990. Avery and Lenora lived in Odessa until 2012, when they moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, to be with their daughter.
Avery was a life long member of the Church of Christ. He was founding member of Crescent Park Church of Christ in Odessa. After moving to Corpus Christi, he attended Parkway Church of Christ.
Avery is preceded in death by his parents, Elcie and Alice Smith; sisters, Evelyn Smith and Ruby Dean Lawson; his son, Avery Lee and two grandsons, Aaron Smith and Adrian Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lenora Smith; sisters, Juanita Snyder and Elwanda Barcroft and her husband, Doyle Barcroft; daughter, Peggy Smith and her husband, Bill Smith; daughter in law, Marlene; grandson, Matt Smith; granddaughters, Lacey Cesarz and Sarah Smith.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM, Friday, February 15, 2019 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Graveside Services will be at 4:00 PM, Saturday, February 16, 2019 with Reverend Shawn Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
