Bennie Wayne Kiker met the Lord face to face on October 22, 2013 after a battle this summer with stomach cancer.
Bennie was born to Benjamin Franklin Kiker and Sarah Lou Ella Strong Kiker on November 28, 1924 on Morgan Hill in North Roby, Fisher County. Bennie was the youngest of eight children followed by two younger half brothers. Bennie moved to Odessa in 1940 and worked for the City of Odessa Street Services. He joined the Navy during WWII and served on the aircraft carrier USS Corregdor CVE58 in the south Pacific. He served at Barbers Point in Honolulu Hawaii with CASU 33 with a rank of Aviation Machinists Mate 3C. He returned to Odessa and later joined the Fire Department in 1952, retiring in 1985 after 33 years.
He married the love of his life, Mildred Price, in 1953. Bennie and Mildred were blessed to be side by side until she passed away in February, just short of their 60th anniversary. Together, they raised three children, Larry, Janet and Monica. Bennie and Mildred owned and managed several rental properties. Bennie could fix, repair or rebuild just about anything. Though he didnt have much of a formal education, he was a mechanical wiz and would take apart and fix just about anything. With hard work and a dedication, any lawn mower, weed eater or appliance could be brought back for a second life. He enjoyed tinkering with old cars and lawn mowers.
Bennie and Mildred raised their children while attending Vine Avenue Baptist Church where Bennie spent many of his days off serving the Lord by servicing the air conditioners and heaters, scraping, painting, sheet rocking, mowing and pulling up grass burrs. Bennie and Mildred retired completely from the rental property business in 1995. Upon retiring, Bennie and Mildred joined and attended Chapel Hills Baptist Church. Bennie taught his children many lifelong lessons, and instilled the value of hard work. He was thrifty and resourceful and didnt like to see anything wasted. He enjoyed traveling with his family and relatives and spent a lot of fun weekends teaching his children the joys of fishing, waterskiing, boating, and camping.
His memory and legacy is carried on by his son, Larry Kiker wife Alice, Janet Gober husband Lee and Monica Maddox husband Keith, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, two brothers and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation with the family will be 68 PM Friday, October 25, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Chapel Hills Baptist Church with Clydel Chapman officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 PM at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
