Benton Dossey

Benton Ray Dossey , 85, passed away at his home in Odessa December 8, 2008 after a brave battle with cancer.

He was born on July 14, 1923 in a rural area of Limestone County. He graduated high school in Groesbeck, Texas. He entered the U.S. Army in February, 1943 and served until February, 1946. He served in the European Theater for 18 months. He was very proud of his military service and was a member of the Local VFW and American Legion. After his service with the Army he attended Sam Houston State University and received his teaching certificate and later returned to receive his Masters in education and administrative certificate. He began his teaching career at Bonham Junior High School in 1955 and in 1966 became the first assistant principal at Nimitz Junior High School where he remained until his retirement in 1983. He spent much of his retirement at his place on the lake enjoying one of his pleasures, fishing and sharing this time with his children and grandchildren.

He was a kind and gentle man who was loved and respected by all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by Mattie Dossey, his wife of 60 years. He is survived by a son, Terry Ray Dossey and his wife Naomi of Odessa. Two daughters: Gloria Dianne Phillips of Odessa and Beverly Joyce Brown and her husband Delma Brown of Ft. Worth. There are four grandchildren and five great grandchildren and two sisters: Jonell Thompson of Arlington, Texas and Floy Little of Mexia, Texas.

Visitation will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 pm on Thursday, December 11, 2008 in Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Emmitt Barnard officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
