Odessa

Betty Faye Stephens Green of Odessa, Texas, passed away on March 20, 2025, in Odessa.

A Celebration of her life will be on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, 11:00 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church in Odessa. Griffin Jones will be officiating. Arrangements are by Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.

Betty was born on May 7, 1930, to Henry Grady and Christine Elizabeth White Stephens in Gadsden, Alabama. The family moved to Sebring, Florida in January of 1946. Early upon their arrival, Betty met Baird Green and, in her words, they “became a “true pair.” After her graduation in 1948, Betty returned to Anniston while Baird was a student-athlete at the University of Florida. Betty explained that “Baird did rather poorly in his junior year, and it was agreed the problem was the absence of Betty in his everyday life.” They were married on September 16,1950. As she explained, “I was largely responsible for his obtaining his business degree and a commission in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps in August of 1951, while I earned a PhT at the same time: Putting Hubby Through!”

Their lives were blessed by the birth of David in 1952 and Susan in 1955. The family lived in Daytona Beach, St. Petersburg and Sarasota, Florida while Baird was in management for the J.C. Penney Company. In 1965, they moved to Fort Worth, Texas where Baird was employed by Sperry & Hutchinson Company...the “S & H Green Stamp Company.”

Betty was employed as a Bookkeeper / Accountant for Texas Steel for a number of years. Betty wrote, “We finally made the address change to Odessa in 1987.” They immediately became participating members of the 1st Presbyterian Church. Through the Fort Worth and Odessa years Betty recounted: “I experienced many events, graduations, marriages, births and seeing my beautiful grandchildren and great-grandchildren develop and grow.”

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of 69 years, Baird Green; as well as son-in-law, Nick Williams. Her love and influence continue in the lives of her son, David Baird and his wife, Loretta; Susan Jones, and her husband, Griff; granddaughter’s, Reagan Whytlaw and husband Brian, Abby Bishop and husband, Josh; grandsons, Justin, Zachary and wife Natalie; great grandchildren, Hadley and Grady Whytlaw, Mallory and Harper Bishop, Celia Green.
