Blanche Shriver Carnes, 101, of Odessa passed away October 31, 2010 in her home surrounded by family.
She was born June 21, 1909 in Center, Oklahoma. Her Mother died when she was 19 months old and her older sisters raised her along with her Dads help. As a young girl their Dad moved the family to Texas. They lived several different places but eventually settled in Jud, Texas, Haskell County, where her Dad put in a blacksmith shop. While living in Jud, she met and married Towers Carnes. They lived all over west Texas and finally moved to Odessa in 1937.
Blanche had six siblings, Ezra Shriver, Jane Boland, Della Neely, Truman Shriver, Lou Miller, and Jack Presley. All preceded her in death, along with their parents, Sadie Ketcham Shriver and James Ezra Shriver.
Blanche and Towers had three children. Joy Jordan deceased, Billy J. Carnes deceased, and Barbara Ruth Coskrey, with whom she lived for 14 years. Blanche had 8 grandchildren, Charlie Jordan, Joylyn Ragland, Ronnie Carnes, Donnie Carnes, Jennifer Parker, Rick Coskrey, Karrie Emerson and Billy Don Coskrey. There was also 11 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.
Blanche loved to talk to her children and grandchildren about her life growing up, including coming to Texas in a wagon with her family. Her 100th birthday party had family and friends from Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico traveling to Odessa to wish her well. For those closest to her, shell be remembered best, though, for singing at the kitchen table while she whipped us at dominoes. Mama will live forever in our hearts.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
