Catherine Phyllis Mudd, 84, of Odessa, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, at the Home Hospice House of Odessa.
Visitation hours will be held on Friday from 68 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton with the burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Monroe City MO on December 13, 1928, to John Gregory and Lilian B. Seward, Phyllis was one of four children and went to school in Monroe City before attending Quincy IL College. Her professional career included employment at A Louis Supply in Ashtabula OH and El Paso Products in Odessa. She also volunteered with the Ector County ISD as an aide to specialneeds children and was active with Meals on Wheels and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
But the lasting legacy of Phyllis Mudd will always be that of a loving, loyal wife and a tireless, doting mother. She met the love of her life, Joseph Richard Mudd, as a schoolgirl in Missouri and married him in a driving snowstorm on New Years Eve of 1947. Together, they shared six decades of love and devotion a lifetime of love, for better or worse before Joes passing in 2007. Along the way, they raised four boys Joseph Gregory of Ashtabula OH, John Stephen of Odessa TX, Michael Richard of Dallas and Jeffrey Scott of Austin and enjoyed spoiling her nine grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Through the years, she attended countless ballgames, nursed a thousand skinned knees, patched both torn clothes and broken hearts and provided a lasting, shining model of what a wife, a parent and a friend could and should be.
The busy business of parenting aside, Phyllis also loved spending time and sharing laughs with her friends. She looked forward to her weekly card games with Ida and the Gang, which became an extended, cherished family of sorts, and to casino getaways to Hobbs with her son Steve and daughterinlaw Joyce. While she claimed to never win, that wasnt really the point to Phyllis, who was instead rich in the ways of friendship.
Once, long ago, one of her sons brought home a ragged, handpicked bunch of field flowers. By the time they found water, the flowers were wilted and faded. Still, Phyllis nursed the makeshift bouquet and placed it on the middle of the kitchen table. When asked why, she said, simply, because thats what moms do.
As a wife, as a mother, as a friend, Phyllis cared tirelessly and nursed dutifully for her family and her husband and, with unwavering pride, always placed it in the forefront. Because, without exception, thats what Phyllis did.
The family would like to express its heartfelt gratitude for the excellent care Phyllis received from the medical and nursing staff at Medical Center Hospital, particularly to the nurses of the criticalcare unit. In addition, a special thank you to the staff at the Home Hospice House, which allowed her to spend her final days in dignity and comfort.
Phyllis is survived by: her sons Jay, Steve, Mike and Jeff her daughtersinlaw Joyce, Judy and Jennifer grandchildren Kelly Pat, Shanna Aaron, J.C., Brian, Maddie, Sarah, McKenzie, McCoy and Mitchell and greatgrandchildren Allison, Julie, Mason and Logan.
