Charles Richard Dick Johnston passed away after a brief illness at his home in Odessa on Monday, July 14, 2008.
He was born September 21, 1942 in Duncan, Oklahoma to Charles D. Johnston and Kathryn Doyle Johnston. Dick grew up in Odessa and was a 1960 graduate of Permian High School where he was part of the first cheerleading squad. In 1970, he graduated from McMurray University in Abilene with a BBA in Marketing. Afterwards he became an independent petroleum consultant travelling all over West Texas as well as New Mexico, Wyoming, Oklahoma, North Dakota, and Colorado. Dick attended many oil field related courses and seminars. One he particularly enjoyed was Blowout Prevention School at the University of Oklahoma. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and telling a tall tale. When he was not watching every televised sport for every season, he was an avid reader and a late-blooming gardener. Dick loved to help his sisters plant numerous types of flowers and foliage in their garden. Dick was a member of the Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Charles D. Johnston; brother George Travis Johnston and great-nephew, Zane Johnston.
He is survived by his daughter, Genevieve M. Smith, her husband Chad and their son, Ewan of Fort Mill, South Carolina; his mother, Kathryn Doyle Johnston of Odessa; his sisters Beth Johnston and Mignon Johnston, both of Odessa and Dianne Hammons and her husband Burl of Temple; nieces Lisa Hamilton and her husband Gary of Cleburne, Cindy Campbell and her husband, Jason of Killeen and Autumn Johnston of Cleburne; nephews Shane Johnston and his wife, Connie of Burleson and Ward Hammons and his wife Bridgette of Spring. He also leaves great-nephews Lastin Johnston of Burleson, Stetson Hamilton of Cleburne and Benjamin Hammons of Spring as well as great-niece Georgeanne Hamilton of Michigan.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, July 26 at 10:00 A.M. at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
