Charles Phillips

Charley Phillips, a retired Texas Electric Service Company employee passed away on February 6, 2017.

He was born August 15, 1938 to John B and Essie Mae Phillips in the backwoods of Southeastern, Oklahoma near the red river. His early years were spent on a share cropper's farm near Mead, Oklahoma. In 1947 his family moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico and for the first time they had electricity, and indoor toilet and piped water into the house.

He graduated high school in Carlsbad, NM in 1956. He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and spent twelve years, with two years aboard the USS Philippine Sea, the USS Hornet, the USS Hancock and the USS Ticonderoga. After service completed, he worked five years at Carlsbad Caverns, a year and a half in the mines then to Fort Worth to build airplanes for General Dynamics. In 1970 he moved to Odessa with Texas Electric Service Company, where he worked until he retired 25 years later. After retiring he worked for Odessa Winlectric.
Along with his wife, Connie and their three sons, they were quite active in High School Rodeos, Ajra Rodeos and Playdays. He helped organize the Odessa Riding Club and was the first President. He helped build Moss Arena and was on the Board of Director's for the Sandhill's Stock Show and Rodeo since 1983. He announced many Junior Rodeos, High School Rodeos, Quarter Horse Shows and Futurities all over West Texas. He was also a former member of the American Quarter Horse Assn.

He loved to tell his grandkids about his life on the farm. About going to town in a wagon. How his mother washed clothes in a tub with a wash board, and his father plowing the fields with a team of horses. He never saw a football game until the ninth grade. Talked into going out for football, he had no idea what to do. After the coach issued the team their uniforms and gear, the coach ask him what position he played and he said usually I play first base. The coach took his uniform back.

Charley is preceded in death by his father, John B. Phillips, his mother, Essie Phillips and his youngest son, Shane.

He is survived by his wife, Connie, whom he married in 1962, his sons, Timothy and Chris, his seven grandkids, Logan, Madison, Tim Jr., Ashton, Dustin, Coby Phillips and Lexi Conner, one great grandchild and his beloved dog, Buddy.

Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 pm, Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Graveside Services will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Greg Morris of Bethany Christian Church officiating.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the Physician's at Medical Center Hospital, Bethany Christian Church and his many friends and extended family.
