Charlotte Hunter

November 30, 1920 — December 17, 2012

Charlotte Neely Hunter, 92, of Odessa, died Monday, December 17, 2012, at Manor Park in Midland.

Charlotte was born November 30, 1920, in Oakdale, California. She completed five semesters at the University of Tulsa, Tulsa, OK, in Geological Engineering where she was an active member of Chi Omega Sorority. On March 28, 1942, she married Otis F. Hunter, and while he served in the United Stated Navy during World War II, she used her training to work in various laboratories testing products and materials needed for the war effort.

The decisions Charlotte and Otis made together following the war were made with an eye toward their future as a family. In August, 1951, they moved to Odessa, TX, and Charlotte managed their home, raised their children, and led a wonderfully full and adventurous life. She was active in PanHellenic and the Girl Scouts in the Permian Basin Council serving as president, leading several troops, playing an instrumental role in the acquisition of HatA Ranch. She learned to fly and earned her twin engine rating, rode her motorcycle throughout the state, and was an avid sailor and race competitor. She remained an active member of the Odessa community bridge clubs, book clubs, gourmet, music, and art appreciation groups, The First Christian Church until her death.

Charlotte is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Evasdaughter of Raleigh, NC her four children and their families: Frances M. Wilson and husband, Bob, of Antimony, UT Margaret H. Nyborg and husband, Phil, of Chapel Hill, NC James S. Hunter and wife, Susie, of Odessa Jeffery T. Hunter and wife, Sherry, of Odessa ten grandchildren: Rob Wilson, W.O. Wilson, Scott Wilson, Scott Nyborg, Adam Nyborg, Charlotte Nyborg, Jeffrey Hunter, O. J. Hunter, Andee Hunter, Kelley Hunter and nine greatgrandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 29, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. in The First Christian Church of Odessa with the Reverend Steve Digby officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the Ellen Noel Art Museum of Odessa or the Neely Hunter Palmer Scholarship Fund.
