Clifton C.M. Riggs moved up to his greater home in heaven on February 6,, 2012.
C. M. was born July 21, 1920 in Van Zandt County, Texas to John Thomas Lillie Belle Pate Riggs. When he was two, the family moved in a covered wagon to Loraine, Texas, where he grew up and attended school.
C. M. moved to Odessa on New Years Day of 1939, and went to work for Barneswell Brothers Oil at a service station on the corner of 2nd and Dotsy. On January 27th of the same year, C. M. drove to Roscoe, Texas to marry the love of his life, Miss Mabel Light. Mama always laughed about her honeymoon dinner, which was a hamburger to go as they drove through Big Spring. They were married for almost 71 years until her death on January 9, 2010.
C. M. served his country during World War II stationed in Germany. Although he rarely spoke of the war except for a few humorous stories, he was highly decorated for his service. He believed that this service was a very personal and private part of his life. He truly was a man who if he could not speak well about someone, he would not say anything at all.
Following the war, he started a construction company, and later a real estate development corporation with two of his brothers. They developed three sections of land in west Odessa and built many homes and commercial properties.
As a member of the Odessa community he strove to better the town throughout his life. He sat on several cityrelated boards and after being asked to run by other council members, was elected to the City Council, serving from 1967 to 1971.
