July 9, 2016, Clyde "Ham" Arthur Hammett of 96 years, cashed in his chips and is now moving on up. Ham was born June 26, 1920 to Ida Leona Crista and A.D. Hammett. After being raised and working on the family farm in Seymour, Texas, he began his career working for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, Ok. On March 22, 1945, he entered the United States Army, completing Infantry and Basic Training with the 521st at Fort Bliss, Texas, and training for the Asian Pacific Campaign against Japan. Ham also accomplished Rifleman with the 745th, Plumber with the 164th and completed 8 weeks as a radio Mechanic in Hawaii with the 340 Signal Company achieving with proficiency 18 words a minute with International Morse Code. Ham was Honorably Discharged on August 9, 1946, and after returning back to the states, earned his living in the West Texas oil fields. He was a member of the Four Mile Club drilling to 21,250' in 1967 in Reeves County, Texas. Clyde Arthur Hammett married Opal Brownlee Walker on April 1964 and had one-step daughter, Betty Jean Walker, and two sons from a previous marriage, Larry and Jerry Hammett.
Ham is preceded in death by his wife, Opal, his step-daughter, Betty Jean Walker, son-in-law W.T.Hopkins and his great great-grandson Ted Jennings.
Ham is survived by granddaughters, Brenda Jennings and husband Wayne of Fort Worth, TX., Sherry Digby of Odessa, TX., and grandson, Paul Hopkins and wife Cacy of Monahans, TX., granddaughter, Rosie Gonzalez and husband Albert, great great-grandchildren Brandy Arnold Douthit and husband Bo of Odessa, TX., Markus Arnold and wife Jessica of Gilmer, TX., Andrea Fitzgerald and husband Scot of Austin, TX., Phillip Green of Odessa, TX., Kyle Green and wife Angelica of Midland, TX., and Lauren Green of Galveston, TX., great great great-grandchildren, Forrest and Perri Jennings of Oklahoma, Chandler Arnold of Odessa, TX, Tex and Lilly Arnold of Gilmer, TX., Brandon, Katie and Carson Fitzgerald of Austin, TX., and Alice Green of Midland, TX.
Graveside Services will be at 1:00, Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Reverend Larry Hood officiating.
The family wishes in lieu of flowers, contributions and tributes be made to local Meals on Wheels or the Monahans Texas, Meals on Wheels program.
