David Leslie Poyner, 69, of Odessa, TX, passed away on August 20, 2021, in Odessa, TX. A memorial service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, TX, on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at 10:00 am, with Matt Jones of Grace and Mercy Fellowship officiating.
The youngest of three, David was born on June 20, 1952, to David Louis Poyner and Katherine Beula Moore Poyner. He graduated from Ector High School in 1970. David married the love of his life, Ilene Baker Poyner on December 29, 1972, in Odessa, TX. He was a self-employed general contractor for over 40 years and has built many homes in the Permian Basin. He served in the Army and was stationed in Germany. David, aka Bootlegger, was the President of Vans Across the Mighty Permian Basin (VAMPB) for over 40 years. He made numerous friends through this association, including his best friend Gary Weeden, aka Double Eagle. The Van Club built a Coors Can replica trailer that received numerous awards at van functions and recognition from the Coors Brewing Company. David and Gary loved to tinker and have built multiple dune buggies, sand cars, motorcycles, go-carts, and four-wheelers. Their families have spent many weekends following each other in their motorhomes with their toy-haulers in tow, sharing their passion for all things that can go fast and get dirty.
As a young married couple, David and Ilene enjoyed traveling in Germany and Switzerland. After their girls were born, they continued their love for traveling by taking many family vacations, going to different van club functions, to the lake or sandhills every weekend. David was good at anything he took on, such as water skiing/slaloming, knee boarding, bowling, shooting, and, most importantly, giving wanted or unwanted advice.
In recent years David and Ilene retired and enjoyed the additional time together.
David was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Dwight Bingham.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ilene, his daughters Beth Poyner (Nathan Vore) of Mount Vernon, Texas and Kayla Poyner of Odessa, TX. He is also survived by two grandchildren Jody Tibbets and Allani Regalado of Odessa, TX, along with his brother Larry Poyner (Cissy) and sister Glenna Bingham of Odessa, TX, as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
The family of David Poyner wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Odessa Regional Medical Center.
As David would always say – “It is what it is” and remember, “DON’T TOUCH THE CHEESE.”
