Donald Ross Snyder, aged 89, passed away July 4, 2008, at Hospice house in Odessa, Texas. He was born in Saugerties, NY, on November 12, 1918, to Ross E. Snyder and Jessie Pyle. He is preceded in death by his brother, Ernest Snyder, and his sister, Ruth Freer, both of New York State. His sister, Shirley Grunenwald, lives in Kingston, NY.
Don served in the U.S. Army from 1939 to 1946 as a Chief Warrant Officer.
He met Lorene Strickland in El Paso during the war and they were married at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, March 5, 1943. He was a retired master machinist from EMCO Machine Works. When he retired at age 65, he converted his machinist skills to woodworking and constructed many fine items of furniture including toys, entertainment centers, display cases, and cedar chests. His cedar chests were very popular and he received requests to make them from all over the state of Texas.
His wife of 65 years, Lorene, died at Hospice House, on June 19, 2008. His son, Larry, died in Odessa last September. He is survived by his daughter, Faye Hall of Odessa. He had 5 grandchildren, Michelle Hansen of McAllen, TX., Robin Hall of Abilene, TX., John Hall, deceased, Larry Scott Snyder and Stacy Brian of Odessa. He also had 9 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Services are to be held at 3:30 pm Tuesday July 8, 2008 in Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, with Military honors with VFW Post 4372..
Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
