Doris Lee Weaver entered this world on December 14, 1931 and left it to be with her Heavenly Father just after sunrise on Sunday, June 5, 2016. Doris was born in Longview, Texas to Robert and Ella Lee. Doris grew up in Texarkana and earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from North Texas State College. After graduation Doris taught school one year in Midland, one year north of San Diego, and then spent the majority of her career as an educator in the Ector County Independent School District. She concluded her public education service by acting as a mentor trainer for the Region 18 Service Center. She obtained her Masters in Education from Sul Ross State University, and as a licensed professional counselor.
In 1957 after she moved to Odessa to teach, Doris met Walter L. Weaver at what would become their home church, Belmont Baptist. They married in 1958 and remained married until his death in 1990. Doris and Walter had two children, Carl David Weaver and Glen Lee Weaver.
Doris left ECISD until her boys started school. When Doris returned to ECISD she initially served as a classroom teacher but over the years moved on to be a counselor, diagnostician, program director and finally served as principal at Cameron Elementary and John Ireland Elementary. She loved teaching children and working with new teachers to help them improve their skills.
Doris also enjoyed teaching about her faith. She taught the Esther Sunday School class at Belmont Baptist Church for literally decades.
She and Walter were for many years' members of an unofficial dining club known as the Goofy Gourmet Club a/k/a "The Goofies". The food may not have always been great, but the friendships were. The Goofies then expanded their activities to travel, including a tradition of an annual pilgrimage over Labor Day to the Indian Lodge in Fort Davis. Doris also loved to travel to visit family and see historic sites, including many fun family camping trips. After she retired she traveled extensively with her sister, brother-in-law, and various friends. They visited many cities in Europe, Canada, the Caribbean and the United States.
Doris Weaver is survived by her children, David Weaver and his wife Pat Long Weaver of Midland, Glen Weaver of Odessa, sister, Mary Cook Putnam of Galveston, brother, Robert E. "Swede" Lee of Texarkana as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their children. She is also survived by her loyal friend of 67 years, Ann Willis of Odessa who was truly a second mother to David and Glen.
The family would like to thank Dr. Stephanie Kubacak, Dr. Joseph Abijay and Dr. Sudhir Amaron for their care and support. We would also like to thank the staff at Home Instead Senior Care, especially Bridgette Flournoy.
