Dorothy Hamilton

June 21, 1918 — August 18, 2013

Dorothy Kerby Hamilton passed away at the age of 95 on August 18, 2013 in Cedar Park, Texas where she had lived for the last few years.

Dot was born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 21, 1918 to James Christopher Kerby and Cloyse Tucker Kerby. She was the eldest and last surviving of four children. Dot graduated from Messick High School in Memphis and attended West Tennessee State Teachers College, now the University of Memphis. Dot married LW Ham Hamilton on May 20, 1943. She and Ham had two children, Genie and Dan. Dot suffered from a severe case of asthma for much of her life and while living in Chalmette, Louisiana, became extremely ill. Doctors recommended that she move to a drier climate and in 1958, the family moved to Pampa, Texas. This proved to be just what was needed. From Pampa, the family transferred to Big Spring and in 1964 settled in Odessa where she lived until moving to Cedar Park.

While in Louisiana, Dot began working in the public library. She continued her library career in Pampa and Big Spring. In Odessa, she worked for the Odessa American for many years. She also enjoyed working with Ham when he traveled as a storm trooping insurance adjuster. She had quit working and was enjoying home life when Ham died in 1974. At that time, she went to work for Florey Claim Service where she worked until she finally retired for good. Dot loved her family and was proud of each and every one of them. She was a devoted Christian and was a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Odessa. She was an avid reader who enjoyed all types of books but especially historical novels, history and the Bible. Dot also loved to walk and made a point of doing so every day even after moving to a nursing home and having to use a walker.

Dot was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Joy and Elizabeth, her brother Bill, and her husband LW.

Mama Dot is survived by daughter Genie and husband Wesley Carroll of Lago Vista, son Dan and wife Sandy of Odessa, grandchildren Tim Carroll of North Bethesda, Maryland, Amy Shapiro and husband Matt of Cedar Park, Adam Hamilton and wife Stacey of Spring, and Anne Hamilton of Odessa. She is also survived by great grandsons, Zachary, Jackson, Cooper, Lucas and Alex.

The family would like to thank New Hope Manor Nursing Home for the love, kindness and care that they provided Dot.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2:00 Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Donnie Williams officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
