Dorothy Josephine Hargis, age 93, of Odessa, TX, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, in Austin, TX. She was affectionately known by her loving family as “Nanny Dot.”
Dorothy was born on July 26, 1930, to Adam George and Josephine Kowalski in Ft. Worth, TX. She attended high school at Northside High School in Ft. Worth, TX. She attended college at Odessa College and The University of Texas of the Permian Basin where she earned her bachelor’s degree in fine arts, followed by her master’s degree. Other education also included four years in Spanish Language.
Dorothy married Billy James (Peewee) Hargis on December 13, 1968, in Lubbock, TX. Together they had a blended family of five children, David Brewer, Susan (Brewer) Holmes, Theresa (Hargis) Morgan, Robert Hargis and Jimmy Don Hargis.
Dorothy worked at Southwestern Bell/AT&T starting as a switchboard operator and working her way up into management for over 46 years. She also worked for Medical Center Hospital as a PBX/telephone operator for 22-1/2 years. She retired at the age of 88. She was a past president of American Businesswomen’s Association, Lubbock, TX, past president of Parents Without Partners, Lubbock, TX and past president of Telephone Pioneers, Odessa, TX. She also was a member of the National African Violet Association.
Dorothy was a long-time member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Odessa, Tx.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her loving husband Billy James Hargis; her parents- Adam and Josephine George; her brothers, Sammy George and Paul George; sister- Christine (George) Cabluck; her infant son- Gary Coy Brewer and her children by marriage-Theresa (Hargis) Morgan, Robert Hargis, and Jimmy Don Hargis
She is survived by her son, David Brewer of Odessa; daughter Susan Holmes and husband, Mike Holmes of Odessa; Granddaughters, Rachel Tiller of Odessa, Holly Bishop of Odessa, Natalie Tiller of Austin, Eden Brewer of San Marcos; great grandchildren, Cheyenne Binkley and Scarlet Binkley of Odessa, Roc Burgos, Cy Burgos, and Rumi Burgos, all of Austin; granddaughter by marriage, April Jenkins of Lubbock; niece, Paula Day of Ft. Worth; nephew, Harry Cabluck of Austin; grandson by marriage, Kevin Guffey of Hutchinson, Kansas and granddaughter by marriage, Angelia Guffey of Amarillo.
Visitation will be from 1:00-3:00 PM, Sunday, October 29, 2023, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, October 30, 2023, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Ed Williamson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
