On March 13, 2014 Erma James Coleman, 79, of Odessa, Texas put on her long white robe and entered the gates of heaven.
Erma James Coleman was born in Tahoka, Texas to Minnie Sayles and Johnie Martin.
She graduated from Dunbar High School in Lubbock, Texas and received her Bachelors Degree in Education from Texas College in Tyler, Texas. She was married to Tarter Coleman, Sr. and they were married for 59 years. She worked as a teacher in Monahans ISD and retired from Ector County ISD after 31 years of service. She attended St. Matthews Baptist Church where she was as a choir member, deaconess, and founder of the St. Matthew Black History Program. Erma was also a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., of the Odessa Alumnae Chapter.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens, 6801 E. Business 20, Odessa, Texas 79762.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on March 19, 2014 at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church with Rev. Christopher T. Redden officiating and Rev. Henry Lovelady, assisting. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
Erma is preceded in death by her parents, Minnie Sayles and Johnie Martin, and three sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Tarter Coleman, Sr., her children, Johnny Williams Tamara, Joyce Bebout Mark, Sonya Wilson Obie, Sophia Clifton, and Tarter Coleman, Jr. She has nine grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. She also has one brother, Johnie Martin and one sister, Ruby Walker, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
