Esther Wood

Esther A. Wood, age 92, passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Hospice in Odessa.

Esther was born in Zalma, Missouri on September 12, 1918 to Mae and Marvin Moore. She was the seventh of 14 children who grew farming on Friends Hill in Oran, Missouri.

After graduating from high school in Oran, Missouri, Esther received her BA degree in education at Cape State Teachers College in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Her teaching career began in a one room school house. She was able to motivate and educate while teaching elementary and middle school children at the same time.

After marrying her high school sweetheart, Roy C. Wood, Sr. in Oran, Missouri, she and Roy settled in Odessa, Texas with their two small sons in 1947.

Esther and Roy established several businesses in Odessa. Their primary business became A1 Plumbing Co. which they owned and operated for over thirty years.

Esther had an amazing amount of energy and drive. While working at A1 Plumbing, she returned to the education profession at Hood Jr. High School teaching English. She also became a real estate broker and operated Wood Real Estate.

She loved spending time with her many brothers and sisters sharing stories of growing up on the farm. Playing card games was a favorite pastime for her family. Her love of family extended to her nieces and nephews. Auntie had a special place for each of them in her heart.

Her six grandchildren were her pride and joy: Travis Wood of Novato, California, Michael Fackler of Austin, Texas, Jonathan Wood of Austin, Texas, Alysia Wood of Los Angeles, California, Ashley Grauman of Seattle, Washington and Woody Wood of Seattle, Washington.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents and ten brothers and sisters and by her beloved husband Roy C. Wood, Sr.

She is survived by a brother, Dean Moore of Mississippi two sisters, Darlees Maxie and husband Glen of Texas and Della June Todt and husband Sylvester of Missouri. She is survived by her sons Dr. Roy C. Wood, Jr. of Granbury, Texas and Fred Wood and wife Bradean of Odessa, Texas six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

All are welcome to visit with Mrs. Woods family from 68 PM Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

A service to celebrate the life of Esther Wood will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, January 7, 2011 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Jesse Gore of Mission Odessa officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
