George Carter

November 6, 1923 — June 14, 2010

George Wallace Carter, 86, passed away on Monday, June 14, 2010, in Midland, Texas.

George was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, on November 6, 1923 to Cyril and Lorraine Burke Carter. The family later moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where George graduated from high school. He attended Texas Tech before joining the Army Air Corp to fight in World War II. He was an artillery gunner in the bottom turret of the bombardier, and he flew on thirtyfive combat missions from June 1944 to April 1945. He was honorably discharged in October 1945 but remained in the Air Force reserves until September 1948.

George married Shirley Ann Lawrence on August 27, 1950. After their marriage the couple moved to Levelland, Texas, where Shirley worked as a public school librarian, and George received a degree in petroleum geology from Texas Tech. They also lived in Wink and Hobbs before moving to Odessa.

Shirley and George had been married for nearly sixty years when she passed away in March of this year. They had no children but had many friends whom they entertained regularly in their home. Both of them were members of the West Texas Jazz Society and never missed a Jazz Party until Georges battle with Alzheimers began.

George was a salesman for Dowell for many years. After leaving Dowell, he went to work for Halliburton and, later on, DresserTitan until his retirement.

George was a Mason, a member of the Odessa Shrine Club, a member of the El Maida Shrine Temple in El Paso, and a member of the Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang. In 1976, he served as president of the Odessa Shrine Club, and in 1993 after being elected to numerous positions in the gang, became the Chuck Wagon Boss.

George was preceded in death by his wife, and his brother Hobart and his sister Peggy.
