George Lee Morris was born May 30, 1931 in Broadwater, Nebraska in a log cabin to Karl and Ena Morris, and passed away at age 80 on June 17, 2011.
Dad was raised in Fort Laramie, Wyoming on the family homestead. The family moved to Leadville, Colorado when he started school. His dad was a teacher at the Colorado School of Mines. The family moved to Long Beach, California in his teen age years for his dad to work building ships during WWII. His dad, Karl was the first president of Welders Union in the United States during the war. Dad and his brother, Tommy had secret service agents who would attend school with them. They loved to try and loose the secret service agents. He loved to body surf in the Pacific Ocean. He graduated from Long Beach High School in 1948. He attended Long Beach College. The family moved to Odessa, Texas in 1949 for his dad to work in the oilfield. Dad came to Odessa in 1950. He then became a lifelong Texan. He attended and graduated from Odessa College in 1952. He attended Texas Tech University for 2 years. He attended UTPB and received his degree in chemistry and teaching in 1982. He went to work for El Paso Products in 1957 in the lab before the plant opened. He retired from El Paso Products in 1985 after 28 years. He taught math at the Comstock, TX school system for 2 years in 1987 1988. He retired again to fish.
He served in the United States Navy on USS Pocono as a 3rd class Petty Officercommunications specialist .
He met Marlene Newman at a caf in Penwell, Texas that his mother was managing. He married the LOVE of his life his ANGEL at Eastside Baptist Church in Odessa, Texas on April 11, 1952. He always called mom his angel and his right hand. Dad missed too many meeting in the Naval Reserved due to being a newlywed. Dad received a letter from the draft board that said your friends and neighbors invite you to join the US Army. Dad always said they may be his neighbors but they darn sure were not his friends. He joined the US Navy where he was stationed out of Norfolk, VA. When dad was released from the US Navy, he went to Texas Tech College. He stopped short of graduation and went to work for El Paso Products in the chemical lab. Dad retired from El Paso Products. Dad and mom moved to Lake Amstead at the lake house. He taught math for 2 years in the Comstock ISD. They decided to move back to Odessa to be near her grandkids.
His hobbies were reading, fishing, and woodworking. He made every great grandchild a rocking chair.
He was extremely proud of his two children and their spouses: Sherry Jack Cook Randy and Paula Morris. Sherry is a science teacher in ECISD. Randy is the owner of Texas Power and Generator in Odessa.
He was extremely proud of his grandchildren and their spouses: Shannon Cook Jessica, Wesley Ally Cook, Kaylee Morris, Lexie Canyon Taylor, Zach Vickers Sabrina of Odessa, and Chad Jesma Morris of Midland, John Linda Morris of San Antonio, Texas. Jack Dale Paramore of Holley Ridge, NC.
He has 10 greatgrandkids: Heath, Gavin, and Madison Morris of Midland, Logan and Emily Cook of Odessa, Kenna Wagner and Baylee Evans of Odessa, Stockton Taylor of Odessa, Kristen Poffenbarger of Big Spring, and Stephen Garcia of Odessa. He had many nieces and nephews: Robie Morris of Austin, David Morris, Scott Norman, Julie Drainer of Odessa, Teresa Darden of Big Spring, and Janice Waldrop of Hennessey, OK. There are many more special nieces and nephews all across the United States.
He is preceded in death by his Dad, Karl V. Morris, his mother, Ena Morris, his brother,
Tommy Morris. Survivors are wife Marlene Morris, children: Sherry Jack Cook and Randy Paula Morris. 8 grandkids, 10 greatgrand kids, many nieces nephews.
Visitation with the family will be 68 PM Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Graveside Services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at West Texas Memorial Park, with family officiating.
The pallbearers are all of his Grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are all his granddaughters.
Dad says to all my family and friends: You are a pest.
