Harley Kennedy

October 20, 1918 — January 30, 2012

Harley R. Kennedy, 93, of Odessa, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2012, at an Odessa hospital surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Storz, pastor of Cornerstone Assembly of God Church, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6:00 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Funeral Home.

Mr. Kennedy was born October 20, 1918, in Piedmont, KS, to John Edward and Sarah Eustler Kennedy. He graduated from Piedmont High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 19411945 and was stationed at Fort Armstrong on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He was later stationed at Hickam Field in Hawaii.

Following World War II, he began working for S.S. Kresges in Fremont, NE, where he met his future wife, Dorothy Marie Garfield. They married on July 21, 1946. He later went to work for TGY in the Kansas City area and transferred to Texas in 1964. In 1966, he became the store manager for TGY in Odessa. He retired from TGY in 1984 with 25 years of service. He then worked for Montgomery Wards for another 10 years. He was a member of Cornerstone Assembly of God Church.

Mr. Kennedy was a loving husband and father and will be missed by all who knew him. Outside of his family, among his greatest joys in life were his church and drinking coffee with his Whataburger buddies.

He was preceded in death by his parents two infant sisters and four brothers, Aaron Kennedy, Scott Kennedy, Percy Kennedy and Paul Kennedy.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Kennedy of the home two sons, Steven Kennedy and wife Neona of San Antonio and Larry Kennedy and wife Evelyn of Gatesville three daughters, Barbara Haenelt of Odessa, Kathy Kennedy of Houston and Nancy Vanley and husband Ace of Odessa nine grandchildren 14 greatgrandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Trey Vanley, Jeremiah Vanley, Dallas Kennedy, Kenneth Kennedy and nephews, Gary Eaton and David Eaton.
