Midland/Odessa – Services for Helen Joann Fuller Scott, 91, of Midland will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 13, 2024, at Sunset Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Billett, Chaplain from Manor Park, officiating.
Helen “Joann” Fuller Scott died peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Manor Park surrounded by her family in spirit. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She loved the Lord and cared for her family & friends deeply.
She was born on December 18, 1932, in Ira, Texas and grew up in Big Spring, Texas with her three siblings and extended family. She was married briefly to Thomas Odell Vinson, but ended shortly after the birth of their daughter Caryolyn Yvonne in 1954. Right after graduating from Nursing School, she met her future husband and love of her life at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas. She married Richard Clyde Scott on November 19, 1955, in Big Spring, Texas.
Richard and Joann established their family in Big Spring, Texas where their two sons Richard Allen and Stephen Merle were born, but shortly after moved to Midland/Odessa where they raised their family. She was a member of the Church of Christ at each town they called home – she adored the Lord, studied His Word, and did her very best to practice His teachings. She loved her family deeply and strived to provide them with a happy home. She and Richard were both dedicated to raising their three children, often working late night and early morning shifts to support their needs. Joann had a special heart for her patients, working for Dr. Cone, Dr. Rountree, Medical Center Hospital and various nursing homes. To relax, they loved taking trips with the family down to the river to fish and enjoy the outdoors. After retirement, they once again packed up their truck and picked-up the hobby of competition chili and BBQ. Joann was a member of the Casi Chili Pod in Odessa, Texas where she won countless competitions on the road to Terlingua and created even more new friends along the way.
Joann (aka “Granny Jo” and “Aunt Joann”) lived to see her direct family grow from three children, into three grandchildren and six great grandchildren and her extended Fuller Family grow into the 100s. She loved spending time with all her family at reunions and celebrations, but especially enjoyed one on one time with whomever would give her a second…where you would always get a “granny story” and a joke or two. Her grand and great-grandchildren have fond memories of spending time with her playing doctor, climbing trees, learning to dance, painting nails, playing Yahtzee, driving ‘the gator’ and of course, learning to cook a little chili.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James Holbert Fuller and Mattie Pauline Buckalew Fuller (February 13, 2001, and December 22, 2007, respectively); and her husband, Richard Clyde “Roy” Scott (July 3, 2008); her son, Richard A. Scott (April 19, 1975); her sister, Elsie Janet Lavern Fuller (December 7, 1998), and her brother-in-law Robert C. Wegner Jr (August 30, 2020).
Survivors include her sister, Sherry L Wegner of Big Spring, Texas; her brother, Donald J. Fuller and his wife Maria of Royce City, Texas; her daughter, Carolyn Y. Thompson and her husband Gary of Midland, Texas; her son, Stephen M. Scott and his wife Jo of Wingate, Texas; and two grandsons, Matthew A. Thompson, his wife Jennifer; as well as their daughters, Emma and Olivia of Pearland, Texas; and Gregory S. Thompson, his wife Melissa as well as their daughter, Madison of Lubbock, Texas; and her granddaughter, Sunnie J. Thiberville, her husband Justin and their three boys Teagan, Tate, and Truitt of Abilene, Texas; and countless cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be sent to the Youth Group at Sherwood Church of Christ - 4900 N. Dixie Blvd, Odessa, Texas 79762 or The Village at Manor Park, designation to support Scharbauer Cottage.
We thank all her care givers and doctors that helped her through the years, especially those at Scharbauer Cottage at Manor Park. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
