Hermine Hemphill, 88, a Philanthropist, the youngest of 6 children, born to Maria and Ludwig Buchner in Regensburg, Germany on December 18, 1926 where she spent her young school years, passed away September 5, 2015 in Midland, TX.
She shall remain in the memory of one remaining sibling, a sister, and her only child, born of a previous alliance, her son, Alexander Raeder and his wife, Susanne of Bonn, Germany as well as many nieces and nephews, most in Germany.
The world has lost a lovely feisty little lady, much loved by all who had the privilege to know her. Deciding to start a new life, she arrived in this country in 1971, driving from New York to Austin, Texas in her green Volkswagen and managed to acquire a couple of speeding tickets on her way. She became a citizen in 1974 and spoke fluent English.
In Austin she and her niece Sigrid, operated a beauty shop. While doing that, managed to remodel a home, doing the work herself. There, she met and in 1974 married a former Mayor of Odessa, Dan Hemphill. Their lovely home in Odessa was located across the street from the City Hall. They were a truly happy and generous couple donating funding and time for many projects, to name a few; The Boys and Girls Club located at the Hemphill Park in Odessa, The Presidential Museum, a scholarship fund at UTPB, and the School of Nursing at Texas Tech.
They loved children so much they operated Camp Summer Life in Taos, New Mexico, a summer camp for youngsters. It had hiking trails, horses, pool, lake, canoes, playfield and a major gym, everything a child would desire.
