Jeanette June Cates was born May 4,1934 in Gladewater, Gregg County, Texas to Dale and Myrtle (Rowland) Stroope. She had (3) brothers: Dale (Frances) Stroope – Rowlett, TX; James (Marilyn) Stroope – Hurst, TX; Preceded in death by Roland Stroope in 1953; (2) Children: Mark (Kaye) Fox – Celina, TX; Terri Fox – Odessa, TX; (6) Grandchildren: Matt Fox, M’Kaylee Lewis Ormsby (Jonathon), Amber Tidmore, Kris Fox, Chase Fox, and Abbi Fox; and (6) Great Grandchildren: Seth Miles, Adam Miles, Noah Tidmore, Zoey Fox, Kenley Ormsby, and Kyler Ormsby.
In 1942, she moved to Odessa, TX where she lived her entire life. She attended Immanuel Baptist Church of Odessa, TX where Bro. Jimmy Delan was pastor and accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at the age of 12.
She was in the Class of 1952 Odessa High School and was still active with her class reunions.
Truman and Jeanette Fox were married on October 16th, 1952. They were married for 34 years when Truman died on January 5, 1987. Jim and Jeanette Cates were married February 14, 2003. They were married 10 years when Jim died on June 12, 2013.
Jeanette worked at Southwestern Bell as a Telephone Operator from 1952 to 1954. She was very well known in the community for making wedding cakes, birthday cakes, and shower cakes from 1980 – 2002. She was also well known as a seamstress until 2024.
She was a member of Northside Baptist Church since 1959 and was faithful to her church for 65 years.
She was also a member of the Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary, a part of the PINK Ladies.
A visitation will be held Sunday, August 6, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held Monday, August 5, 2024, 1:00 PM, at Northside Baptist Church, 100 W 50th St, Odessa, TX 79764, with Reverend Clydell Chapman officiating. The burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home in Odessa.
