James “Jimmy” Jay Johnston of Odessa, TX passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at home while studying his bible, ending a 75-year life of service dedicated to God, family, church, and community.
Born in Austin, Texas, to Joseph “Joe” and Vera Johnston on December 29, 1947, Jimmy relocated to Odessa when he was just a year old. He was a proud Permian High School graduate and lifelong Mojo fan. He received his BBA from North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) in Denton, TX.
Jimmy returned to Odessa for the draft after college and never left, meeting the love of his life, Angeline “Angie” Kirksey Johnston. Jimmy was dedicated to the community of Odessa in many ways. He worked as Chief Accountant for the City of Odessa and the Firefighters Relief and Retirement Fund for 32 years before retiring to follow his favorite sports teams more closely. He also served as an elder and a member of the finance team at Immanuel Baptist Church in Odessa, having attended with his family since he was a child.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Angie Johnston; daughter, Elizabeth (and her husband Rocky Holtzclaw); son, James (and his wife Sarah Spikeston); grandchildren, Nika Valentina and Jovi James; his sister, Sheila Johnston Prather; and brother, Delbert Johnston.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 12, 2023, from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home in Odessa. Burial will be 10:00am, Friday, January 13, 2023, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM, at Immanuel Baptist Church with Landon Coleman officiating.
