John Armstrong J.A. Church, 84, of Odessa, died Sunday morning at his residence.
He was born October 29, 1926 in Houston, Texas to Dick Sybil and Myrtle Gwendolyn Danner Church the oldest of twin boys. His father died in December 1927 and the family moved to San Angelo where Mrs. Church and her sister opened a room and boarding house. She operated this until her death in August 1949. John graduated from San Angelo High School in 1944 and attended San Angelo Jr. College for two years. In 1947 he moved to Galveston and became a security guard on the water front and aboard steam ships for Danners Marine Guard Service, he later transferred to Houston. In 1955 he joined J.L. Brooks as a service station attendant and later as a truck driver. In 1957 Mr. Church moved to Odessa and became employed by the City of Odessa at the Water Reclamation Plant. In 1967 he earned his Class A Sewage Certification and in 1968 he earned his Class A Water Certification. He served as the Superintendent of the water and sewage treatment plants from 1968 to 1976. He joined Tesoro Petroleum Corporation from 1976 to 1985 retired from Tesoro and rejoined the City of Odessa until he retired in February 1989.
He married Blanche Spencer December 18, 1970 in Odessa, Texas she died on January 30, 1985. He was a member of Cross Roads Fellowship.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Jackson Danner Church, and his wife Blanche Spencer.
Survivors include his nieces and nephews Marsha Bailey of Tomball, TX Diana Porter of Lubbock, TX Dene Valdez and husband Arnulfo of Odessa, TX Sandra Birdwell and husband Garland of Port Aransas, TX Darrell Spencer and wife Toni of Post Falls, ID Dale Spencer and wife Nancy of Odessa, TX. Numerous greatnieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with David Newton officiating. Visitation will be 5:00 7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Cross Roads Fellowship.
