John "Johnny" N. Mullis, age 70, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2019, in Lubbock, Texas.
As a native Texan, he enjoyed having horses and tending to his place in the country. Setting out trees, riding his John Deere tractor, and watching for the winter grass he had sown were some of things he enjoyed in his retirement. He was a devoted and loving husband, Daddy, and Pappaw who cherished time with his family. He couldn't be more content than when he was sitting in his lawn chair under the shade with a glass of iced-lemon tea to look out at the wide-open skies of West Texas. The only thing better- having his family right there with him.
John is preceded in death by his daughter, Emily, in 1993, his older brother, Don in 2012, his parents, M.T. and Jessie (Wiser) Mullis, his mother and father-in-law, Toshi and Minae Ichinohe, and brother-in-law, Yoshihiro Ichinohe.
He is survived by his wife and best friend of 48 years, Sumiko; daughter, Christi and husband Mike Steed; three grandchildren, Morgan, Mackenzie, and John Thomas "J.T."; sister-in-law, Carol Mullis; nieces, Debbie and husband, Cleo Smith; Pam and husband, Mike Price; Missy and husband, Mike Burkham; Prissy Young; and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Noriko and husband, Takeshi Sugiyama; sister-in-law, Nobuko and husband, Masakazu Shingaki; sister-in-law, Hiroko Ichinohe; niece, Takako and husband, Kouki Ono; niece, Akiko; nephew, Eisuke and wife, Nan Sugiyama; nephew, Yusuke and wife, Yukari; and great nieces and nephews.
