Jonie Hartman

Jonie Barton (J.B.) Hartman passed away at the age of 89 on Sunday, December 16, 2018 in Austin, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, Friday, December 21, 2018 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held in the Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 1:00 PM in the afternoon.

Jonie is survived by his sister Winnie Blanscett of Midland; his children, Steve Hartman of Opelousas, LA, Debra Hartman Hough and husband Joe, of New Braunfels, Gary Hartman and wife Francine of Austin, David Hartman and wife Robin of Pflugerville, Daniel Hartman of Buda, Cindy and Terry Weatherford of Odessa, Bobby Lea of Odessa, and Pam Ritchie of Odessa.

Grandpa (Paw) will be missed by his beloved grandchildren: Mary Hartman Smith, Brian Hartman, Matthew Hartman, Stephen Michael (Stevie) Hartman, Joseph Hough, Rachel Hough, John Hough, Wendy Ballard, Stormy Fisher, Tarena Stormes, Stephen Lea, Jonie Lea Driggers, Jamie Lea Halsell, Cody Ritchie, and Amy Ritchie. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of many wonderful great grandchildren, nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.

Jonie is preceded in death by his precious wife Sandra Hartman; his mother Reba Hartman and father Israel Hartman; his daughter Debbie Lea; his sister Midge Hartman Reeves; his brothers, Ray Hartman, Edd Hartman and R.D. Hartman; his niece Donna Blanscett; and his brothers-in-law Tom Bailey and Harold Hodgson.

Jonie was born in Coleman County, Texas on November 21, 1929 to Reba Dee (Hester) and Israel Elmer (I.E.) Hartman. Jonie grew up, along with his remarkable brothers and sisters, on farms in Santa Anna, Texas, learning the value of hard work and education from their mother. After attending Santa Anna High, he set out for work in Odessa, Texas in 1947. Jonie married his high school sweetheart Julia Ann Bailey, and after serving in the U. S. Air Force, settled with Julia in Odessa, where they raised their five children. They were dedicated members of 6th and Jackson Church of Christ where Jonie served as a teacher and deacon for many years.

Jonie worked for over 42 years for Southwestern Bell Telephone, developing lifetime friendships with many special coworkers throughout those years. Later, Jonie spent his retirement years happily squaredancing, gardening and traveling with his lovely second wife Sandra (Hodgson) Hartman and her treasured family.

Jonie was a devoted father who worked hard and passed along his strong work ethic to his five children. Jonie's mind shared the same work ethic as his hands. To his children, there was nothing he couldn't dream up and turn into reality with those strong, calloused
hands--from carving swords found on a forest floor and building stilts for kids' play, to drawing and painting (a passion he indulged throughout his life), to building shops and remodeling houses with his dear friend Harold Armstrong.

Jonie was a cowboy at heart, who spent many happy years mending fences and riding out to check the cattle on his beloved Sterling City ranch. He passed this love of ranching on to two of his sons, Steve and Danny, with whom he dreamed and planned of herds and horses until the day he died.
Jonie was an inspiration and a blessing to all he met. He was a very special member of his retirement community where he and his faithful companion, sweet little Precious, were dearly loved as family. It was his great pleasure, in his retirement community, to host barbeques, with the help of his son David (whose family also loved taking Jonie out for catfish!) and to gather friends for impromptu sing-a-longs, with his son Gary pickin' guitar and wise-cracking alongside him. It was always a treat for everyone to join in singing with Jonie. He relished family reunions where he could play dominoes, share memories, "run up the bidding," laugh and blend that beautiful voice with the harmonies of his precious brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews (known to family as The Hartman Family Singers)!
Jonie's daughter Debra will forever cherish sharing his joy and wonder of nature-- the beauty of clouds, snow falling, autumn trees and wildlife--with his artist's eye and heart, he appreciated every detail. His loving disposition, wry wit and indomitable spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved Jonie Hartman.
