Joyce Loretta Garrett Freeland, of Odessa, Texas passed away on December 26, 2014.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm, Tuesday, December 30 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church at 4141 Tanglewood with The Reverend David Mossbarger, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
Joyce was born in Chicago, Ill to Hattie Mae Douglas Garrett and Virgil Fenton Garrett on June 17, 1929. She attended school in Dallas, Texas. She graduated from the University of Texas where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega. She married E. Y. Tom Freeland, Jr. on August 2, 1950 in Dallas, Texas. She worked as a teacher in Sherman, Lamesa, and Odessa. She taught for over 25 years at Hays Elementary in Ector County and retired in 1991. After retiring, Joyce traveled to many national parks in the West and in Canada. She enjoyed traveling to the East Coast but her favorite destination was the Grand Canyon.
She volunteered for West Texas Food Bank and was a regular volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was also an active member of the Episcopal Church, first at St. Johns, then St. Barnabas. She served on the vestry, played the piano for Seabury Nursing Center, was a delegate to the Diocesan Convention, did church visitation, sang in the choir, was a member of the Episcopal Lay Womens Organization and was instrumental in organizing The Daughters of the King at St. Barnabas.
Joyce is preceded in death by her husband E.Y. Tom Freeland, Jr. and parents Hattie Mae Douglas Garrett and Virgil Fenton Garrett and her brother Robert Douglas Garrett.
Joyce is survived by her daughter Marsha Dossey and her husband Byron, of Branson, Missouri her daughter Anne McKandles of Moore, OK her son Paul Freeland and his wife Serena, of Odessa, TX. She is also survived by her six grandchildren: Lisa Diane Dossey of Oklahoma City, OK, Daniel Paul Dossey of Branson, MO, Katherine Anne McKandles Boudreaux of Moore, OK, Kimberlea Mae McKandles of Pampa, TX, David Paul Freeland of Odessa, TX, and Michael Garrett Freeland of Odessa, TX. She also has two greatgrandchildren, Jackson Paul Moore of Pampa and Everett Edwin Boudreaux of Moore, OK. She is also survived by her best friend and traveling buddy, Sarah Schaub, godmother to all of Joyces grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, much appreciated memorials can be made to St. Barnabas, Odessa, Texas or Meals on Wheels, Odessa, Texas.
