Joyce LaVerne Powers, age 69, passed away Monday, August 22, 2010 in Lubbock, Texas.
Joyce LaVerne Powers of Lamesa, TX was born in Memphis, Texas March 1, 1941 to George and Joyce Shewmaker. She graduated from Odessa High School in 1960. Joyce married the love of her life, Sam Powers, December 19, 1967. Sam quickly noticed she was excellent in sales and always encouraged her. She became an insurance agent in 1980. Known for being able to sell ice water to an Eskimo she achieved and maintained top seller status for many years. She retired from insurance in 2004 and then became a part time sales person at the Sears Home Store in Sealy, Texas. Her ability for sales enabled her and her husband to open their own Sears store in Lamesa, Texas in 2009.
Although Joyce never had children of her own, her strong Christian values and beliefs provided a strong positive influence on her niece and nephew whom she thought of as her children. Those values also influenced anyone who knew her.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents George and Joyce Shewmaker. She is survived by her husband Sam Powers brother George Shewmaker Jr. niece Ericka Ary and husband Paul uncle Russell Bradley and wife Jenna nephew David Powers and wife Lillian greatniece Jennifer Potter and husband Clay greatnephews Christopher and Stephen Reffner, Jacob and Joshua Powers, and great greatnephew Briar Potter and many cousins.
Visitation with the family will be 57 PM Friday, August 27, 2010 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Eugene Buchanan officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
