Karlyn Elizabeth Henderson Houston, 74 of Odessa died Saturday, November 24, 2012 in Crane. Karlyn was born June 6, 1938 in Parkland Hospital, Dallas, TX, to Lillian Kaltriter and Malcom Henderson.
She grew up and attended elementary school in Navasota, TX, Clovis, NM, and Denver, CO. Received scholarship to attend Mount Carmel High School in Denver, CO, from the 8th to 10th grades. Moved to Clovis, NM, to attend high school, in the 11th and 12th grades. Karlyn was a member of several organizations including the newspaper staff as a reporter, and Girls Debating Club. Her senior year she was Editor of the school annual, graduated with honors and went to EMNU on scholarship, majoring in research chemistry.
Married Howard Houston in Fort Sumner, NMs First Methodist Church on December 28, 1956, which lasted for 57 years. She was a Catholic. Lived in Clovis, Artesia and Gallup, NM, Levelland and Odessa, TX. She worked at 711 before becoming a seamstress for several cleaners, and starting her own alteration business, eventually being hired as a U.S. Postal Clerk where she eventually retired from. She as active in Girl Scouts, Band Boosters, and Beta Sigma Phi. The love of her life were her books, she could never get enough time to read.
Karlyn had five children, Samuel Houston, Suzan Houston of Odessa, Fred William Houston of Andrews, David Houston of Midland and Howard Charles Houston of Odessa. She had six grandchildren and one great grandson. She is also survived by a brother, Bill Henderson and his wife Kenda of Santa Fe, NM.
