Katherine Mccain

March 7, 1933 — June 24, 2015

Katherine Janet Black McCain, age 82, of Odessa, TX passed away on June 24, 2015 at Medical center Hospital.

Katherine was born in Muleshoe, TX on March 7, 1933 to Lyndon Ralph Black and Naomi Dora Owens Black. She grew up on a dry-land farm, no stranger to hard work and tough times. She was raised never to waste anything, to mend what needed fixing and to never throw out what might be needed in the future. She enjoyed her beloved pet poodles, sewing, crafting and hunting for arrowheads. She loved supporting her kids in activities such as band, choir and Boy Scouts. She received the Silver Fawn award from the Boys Scouts of America. She was the Odessa High School Booster Club President and affectionately known as "Momma Mac" by marching band students for whom she made 100 capes, and she was a lifetime PTA member. She was a member of Altrusa International and retired in the 1980's as director of the American Red Cross in Odessa, TX. After retirement, she lived briefly in Ruidoso, NM and El Paso, TX, before returning to Odessa where she put her nursing skills to use providing end of life care to people in their final days.

Katherine had a feisty spirit and a tenacious constitution. She prided herself on her independence and autonomy, but loved her family dearly and cherished every moment she spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She often showed up with a small gift or toy for the kids in the family.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Billy.

Katherine is survived by her sons, Ralph Marion McCain and his wife Dahrl , Allen Lynn McCain and his wife Tami, James Leland McCain and his wife Karen; daughter, Renea McCain Ritchie Tutt and her husband Carl; grandchildren, Amber Lynn Pearce, Keiva Hill McCain Wiese, April Leann Wright, James Chase McCain, Sarah Kay Baimbridge, Russell Lyndon Ritchie, Lyndal Reese McCain, Marissa Dawn McCain King, Michelle Strahan and 10 great grandchildren. Eleven of her twelve brothers and sisters, Shirley, Maxine, Lyndal, Gaylon, Ronnie, Karon, Dean, Rita, Ricky, Rex and Kim, also survive her.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the MCH CCU nursing staff. Their care and compassion for Katherine and her family is deeply appreciated.
