Albert Q. Butler and Katie Lee Walther were married on January 21, 1945. Each married the love of their life and they had 67 years of happiness together. Al passed away on October 12, 2012 in Odessa, Texas. He was followed in death by Katie on October 17, 2012 in Odessa, Texas. Al was 88 years old and Katie was 87.
They were preceded in death by their oldest son, John William Butler of Fort Worth, Texas.
They are survived by their daughter Judith Ann Huffman husband Jim, son Robert Patrick Butler wife Julie, daughter Rebecca Lee Hogan husband John, son David Randall Butler wife Cari, grandchildren Sherry Hardin husband Drew, Jana Ellsworth husband Edward, Rebekah Bulen husband Stacy, Byron Campbell wife Kelly, Sara Mattes husband Aron, Michael Butler, Matthew Butler wife Nicole, Brett Hogan, Cody Hogan, Michael Tate Butler, and 11 greatgrandchildren.
During World War II, Al served as a fighter pilot in the 1st Fighter Squadron of the 413th Fighter Group, flying missions over Okinawa, Formosa and Japan. He participated in the Ryukyus Islands offensive, The China offensive, and the Japan Air offensive. Al also served in the 337th Air Service Group, flying single and two engine aircraft in air transport missions in the Asiatic Pacific theater.
Al received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas AM University in 1950, and a Masters Degree in Engineering Mechanics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1952. He served in various Engineering capacities at Austin Brothers Steel Company, Dow Chemical Company, Rexall Drug and Chemical, El Paso Products Company and at Huntsman Corporation. Al retired from Huntsman Corporation on May 1, 2000.
Katie graduated from W.H. Adamson High School in Dallas, Texas at age 16, and went to work for Aetna Casualty and Surety Company. While working for Aetna, Katie was introduced to Al by a friend from work. They fell love and married before Al went overseas.
After Al returned from World War II, Katie worked while Al completed his education and they started their family. They moved to Odessa in 1961 and Katie worked as a secretary in the central office of the Odessa Public School System. She also worked as an assistant for the District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church.
Al and Katie were active members of St. Lukes United Methodist Church for 50 years from 1962 to 2012. Their priority in life was loving and caring for each other and their five children. They were especially proud of their many Grandchildren and GreatGrandchildren.
Combined Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Lukes United Methodist Church, 1601 East 42nd Street, Odessa, Texas 79762. St. Lukes pastor, Reverend Brad Bennett will officiate. Graveside service will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Michael Butler, Matthew Butler, Byron Campbell, Drew Hardin, Edward Ellsworth, and Stacy Bulen.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Brett Hogan, Cody Hogan, Travis Bulen, Tye Hardin, Julian Fulp, and Dick Turner.
There will be no formal visitation.
