In the early morning hours of Monday, August 21, 2023, Larry Allen quietly slipped from the loving arms of his devoted wife and family into the loving arms of Jesus.
Larry Rene Allen, born April 17, 1946, in Cushing, Oklahoma, was a longtime resident of Odessa, Texas. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1964 and from Odessa college in 1966 with an associate degree. Larry enlisted in the Navy in 1966 serving in Vietnam.
On December 5,1966 Larry married his high school sweetheart, Patsy Taylor. They had two children, a daughter, Shauna Allen and son, Todd Allen. Patsy and Larry became the proud grandparents of Ansley, Azure and Axel Allen.
After his tour of duty, he returned to Odessa. Larry quickly established Allen’s Casing Crews. He owned and operated this business until his early retirement 14 years ago. His wife, Patsy was also an active co-owner of the company. Even during the downturns of the oil industry, the couple managed to keep their business going. A testament to their determination.
Preceding Larry in death are his mother, Mona Weems; father, Clyde Allen and step- mother, Betty Allen. He is survived by his brother, Rick Allen of Reno, Nevada; and sister, Debbie Shuman of Oklahoma.
Besides working Larry loved to fly. Over the years he owned several airplanes and a helicopter. Not only was he a licensed fixed wing pilot but he was certified to fly helicopters. This love of flying was passed on to son Todd and grandson Azure. Both are licensed pilots. His youngest grandson, Axel, is currently attending classes to become an Airplane Mechanic.
Oh yes, and Larry was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was skilled in both sports. He hunted with a bow and arrow, although Patsy claimed he never shot anything. He once traveled to Cuba on a fishing adventure.
Larry was a member of Crossroads Fellowship. He served as a greeter. Larry was a baptized believer in Christ. That in itself is the greatest testament.
A few lines regarding a person’s life is never the full measure of a person’s time on earth. However, Larry was well loved by those in his life. His last years were filled with a failing body and sometimes mind but he was so lovingly cared for by not only his wife Patsy and daughter Shauna but care givers who became a part of the Allen family.
The family wishes to acknowledge those loving hands that helped provide care. Even Larry’s dry sense of humor and feisty behavior was accepted by these angels. Carrie Maxwell, Emily Marruffo, and Patrice Harris were on the frontlines. Sometimes they were called upon to watch the same war movie over and over.
And all those many hospice workers and nurses that helped hold things together until the end. And our dear friend Dr. Kavor Dar and his tender heart are so precious to our family.
Pallbearers will be Azure Allen, Axel Allen, Herman Kinkaid, Darrell Bran, Perry Anderson, and Bill Ritter.
