Laverne Mcdaniel

Laverne Ledbetter McDaniel, 85, formerly of Odessa, passed away Friday evening November 20, 2009 at Midland Memorial Hospital.

She was born February 18, 1924 in Knox County, TX to Stanley Mercer Ledbetter and Jewell Alvey Ledbetter. She moved to Burkburnett, Texas at an early age, before moving to Electra, Texas at age nine. She graduated from Electra High School in 1941 and enrolled at Drauhan Business School in Wichita Falls, Texas. After graduation, she worked for Levines Department store as personal secretary for Mr. Levine then worked at Sheppard Air Force Base as personal secretary for Major Snell and Captain White. She married Dee McDaniel in Electra, Texas on July 12, 1943. Dee was serving as a pilot with the US Army Air Corp during WWII serving in the Pacific Rim. After his discharge and they lived in Wichita Falls, Odessa, Denver City and settled back in Odessa in 1960. Mr. McDaniel died in Odessa in 2004.

She is survived by her children, Sharon Shaw and husband Jim of Spring, TX, and Cathie Whitley of San Diego, CA; Mark McDaniel and wife Maurene of Midland, and Treva Powell and husband Chris of Monahans, TX. Grandchildren; Jim Shaw and his wife Jennifer of Spring, TX Karla Rettig and husband Eric of Brenham, TX, John McDaniel and wife Lauren of Keller, TX, Marcie Miller and husband Zac of Lubbock, Damon Whitley and wife Yukiko of San Francisco, CA, and Darren Whitley of Vista, CA. Great-grandchildren; Bailee Rettig, Leah Rettig, Emily Shaw, and Elliot Shaw.

Funeral services will be held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 10:00 AM Monday, November 23, 2009 with Rev. Jan Reed officiating, funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. The McDaniels family request that memorials be directed to Hospice of Midland, 911 W. Texas, Midland, TX 79701. They want to express their grateful appreciation for the care and comfort provided by everyone associated with Hospice of Midland and the Hospice Unit located at Midland Memorial Hospital.
