Leland Earl Finley was born to David Earl Finley and Inez Downing Finley in Mena, Polk County, Arkansas on January 20, 1932. As a youth, Leland moved with his parents to Wellington, Collingsworth County, Texas where he graduated from Wellington High School. On April 16, 1952, Leland enlisted in the US Army where he served in the Korean War. Following his return from overseas, Leland remained in the Army reserves until his discharge in 1960, when Staff Sergeant Finley was honorably discharged.
Leland married Myrtie Ellen Bayless on August 18, 1952 in Morton, Cochran County, Texas. The couple has three children: Donna Sue Jones, Larry Dean Finley and Linda Ann Burns, all of whom reside in Odessa. Leland is survived by three grandchildren: Christopher Ryan Jones, Aaron Kyle Jones, and Kayla Rochelle Jones. Leland was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Kristyn Charity Burns.
Leland worked as a contract welder until his retirement and was a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church.
Visitation with the family will be from 5:00-7:00 PM, Friday, December 5, 2008 in Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday, December 6, 2008 in Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. David Miller and Dr. Cecil Maxey, officiating. Graveside services with Military Honors will follow at 2:00 PM Saturday, December 6, 2008 in Robert Lee, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Crescent Bark Baptist Church Missions Fund, 3002 East University Blvd, Odessa, Tx. 79762.
Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
