Truett Newsom passed away October 21, 2013 due to unexpected heart complications. He was born August 8, 1953 in Odessa to Lewis Zula Newsom. A lifelong Odessan, he was a proud graduate of the Odessa High Bronchos Class of 1971. He had a gift of carpentry, and over the past 40 years, he constructed and renovated hundreds of homes and businesses in the OdessaMidland area. Many of his customers were repeat customers due to his excellent work and attention to detail. He loved working with his hands, and his skill of construction was amazing. He always had a long list of jobs and while it was hard to get on that list, it was worth the wait for his expertise, which would always result in the perfect house, office or additional room the client dreamed of.
Truett was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where he served amongst the Immanuel Baptist Mens Mission Team, sharing his gift of carpentry to rebuild after disasters. Truett was extremely instrumental during more than a dozen trips to Mexico over a threeyear period where he spearheaded the volunteer teams construction of a Medical Clinic, a Home for the Pastor and the largest job, which was a Dormitory for handicapped children. Truett also served as a member of the Texas Baptist Disaster Relief Organization, going on two trips to Mexico as they fed thousands during natural disasters. His most recent work for the Organization included building showers that were used for Rock the Dessert this past summer. He had also volunteered on many Christmas in April projects over the years. Regardless of his extremely busy construction business, Truett always managed to fit in the volunteer labor, saying, Im working for the Lord.
Truetts other interests included fishing at his River House near Eagle Pass, along with riding motorcycles and being outdoors. He was a lover of history, especially facts and information about the Lone Star State. While he had many interests, nothing pleased him more than spending time with his grandchildren, which truly made him light up and brought a big smile to his face. The feeling was mutual, as they loved and had a great time with their Pap.
Truett is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, Landon Newsom, and his wife Heather and their children Emily and Lane, all of Beaumont daughter, Melanie Allen, and her husband, Mike, and their children, Graham and Addison, all of Odessa. Truett is also survived by his longtime love and best friend, Angie Bell, and her sons John Austin Bell and Justin Turner, all of Odessa. He is also survived by his sister, Janie Cotton, and her husband, JD, of Odessa and their children, Brian Rankin and LeeAnn Cody, all of Odessa. He also had a special bond with Tony Davis, his construction helper and sidekick of 20 years. Truett had a host of friends through his church and he also considered many of his construction clients his friends as well.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Wednesday, October 23rd, from 5pm to 7pm at Sunset Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10am on Thursday, October 24th, at Immanuel Baptist Church with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Those wishing to remember Truett may do so through memorials to the Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center or the United Way of Odessa.
