Lucille Drury Callaway, 80 died with grace on Thursday, October 7, 2010, at Hospice House of Odessa, TX. She was born on March 8, 1930 in Carlsbad, NM to Henry Reuben Drury and Daisy Estelle Sharply Drury making their home in Longview, TX.
Lucy passed away with the sense of style, grace and humor which made her so loved by friends and family. Her sharp wit and sparkling eyes took in 80 years of life, which she shared in her love of poetry, history, and storytelling. Her poetry won 3 first place awards from the Texas State Poetry Society, in addition to various regional and local awards. After writing historical articles for the Odessa American in the 1960s, Lucy researched the Drury family history from the battlefield of William the Conqueror in 1066 up to the date of the geneologys publication in 2005. Family was paramont to this loving sister, mother, grandmother and aunt. She was a member of the Poetry Society of Texas, Friends of the Library, Juliettes with the Globe Theatre, Texas Nightwriters, The National Organization for Women, Women Voters Association of Odessa, and served two years as historian for the local chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Mel Callaway son, Patrick Mel Callaway brother, Douglas Drury and sister, Edwina Mildred Drury.
She is survived by her daughter Gwen Callaway Hutson of Midland and husband Michael granddaughters, Melissa Leeper of Midland and Diane Leeper of Tampa, Florida and husband Travis Lawson stepgrandson, John Hutson and wife Heather and three greatstepgrandchildren, Tyler, Elise, and Peyton Hutson, of Midland stepgranddaughter, Jennifer Hutson, of Odessa sisterinlaw, Nelda Drury, of San Antonio and nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Drury Newton, of San Antonio Sandra Kay Palmer, of Dallas and Michael Palmer, of Longview.
A Memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, October 11, 2010 at 10:00 am at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Cook officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Hospice House of Odessa, which provided Lucille such comfort during the passing of her son.
