Jose Guadalupe (Lupe) Gonzalez, 86, of Odessa, TX passed away on August 17, 2024, surrounded by family at his home in Odessa.
The visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 21st, 2024, with a Recitation of the Rosary to follow at 6:00 PM, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, on Thursday, August 22nd, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Bernard officiating. A burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
Lupe was born on August 31, 1937, in Marin, Nuevo Leon, Mexico to Justo Gonzalez and Paula Gonzalez. He married the love of his life, Petrita Gonzalez, and was happily married for 58 years. Lupe passed away exactly 4 months and 1 day after his wife. They could not stand being separated for more than a day or two at a time.
He was the owner of Southern Maid Donuts on 8th and Hancock Ave. in Odessa, TX since 1966 where he made and sold melt in your mouth donuts for his community and beyond with love for decades. Lupe dedicated the majority of his life to his donut shop. He woke up at 3 am to make donuts for the people of his community 7 days a week because he was in love with creating the best donuts for everyone to enjoy. In a recent interview with a local news station, he said he’d do it all over again if he could.
Lupe made so many friends at his shop throughout the years, he loved serving his community in any way that he could, and he made so many donuts along the way. He once made a similar calculation for an interview with another local news station - he easily single-handedly made enough donuts to line up from his shop to NYC in his lifetime (and that’s a safe estimate).
Lupe was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, friend and unofficial life and business coach. He was also the hardest working human any of us ever knew and was the example for everyone around him of an impeccable work ethic. Lupe is already and will forever be extremely missed. We will live the rest of our days and continue making and selling his donuts with love in his honor (that was his wish).
Lupe is preceded in death by his father, Justo Gonzalez; mother, Paula Gonzalez; brothers, Salvador Gonzalez, Adan Gonzalez and Manuel Gonzalez; and sister, Eva Gonzalez de Bello.
Lupe is survived by his son, Jose Guadalupe Gonzalez, Jr.; daughters, Angelica Moreno and Elisa Gonzalez; son-in-law, Pavel Campero; grandchildren, Kyree Moreno, Kyson Moreno, Karly Moreno; great grandchild, Odin Hinds; sisters, Angelica Gonzalez de Treviño and Dora Gonzalez de Castro; and brother, Justo Jesus (Chuy) Gonzalez.
Pallbearers will be José Guadalupe Gonzalez, Jr., Kyson Moreno, Pavel Campero, Hector Mendoza, Gerardo Mendoza, Paco Villanueva, Adán Gonzalez, Edgar Gonzalez, Harvey Gonzalez and Jessie (Chuy) Gonzalez.
The family of Lupe Gonzalez wishes to extend our sincere thanks to every family member and friend that sent their love, support and who have prayed for Lupe during this very difficult time.
