Mabel Riggs

November 23, 1920 — January 9, 2010

Mabel Light Riggs, 89, passed away January 9, 2010 in Odessa, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born November 23, 1920 near Inadale, Scurry County, Texas, to Jim Light and Stella Wade Light. She attended a country school in the Pryon community, also in Scurry County, and graduated Salutatorian of her class at the age of 16.

She met the love of her life, Clifton Riggs, at the Inadale Community Party in 1938. They married in Roscoe, Texas on January 28, 1939, and moved to Odessa the next day. They started their life together working in a service station at 2nd and Dotsy, living in two rooms on the back of the station with no bath.

Mabel was a person who deeply loved children. Everywhere she lived in Odessa, her home was where all the kids gathered after school. She would show the girls how to sew, cook, play games and just have fun. With the boys, she could play football, baseball, or basketball, and she was always the referee.

She is survived by her husband, Clifton CM Riggs, son Donald Ray Riggs and wife Linda, daughter Sandra Jo Cox and her husband Douglas of Odessa, adopted sons Kevin Riggs and his wife Iris, Quinn Riggs and his wife Jami, all of Odessa, Kyle Riggs and his wife Kristi of San Antonio, Texas, and one sister, Velma Tolbert and her husband Bill of Odessa grandsons Sean Smith and wife Jodi of Buda, Texas, Kirk Riggs and wife Gina of Boerne, Texas greatgrandchildren Bryce, Clark, Mackenzie, Cole, Jessica, Cory, Sara, Sydney, and Jesse, and three greatgreatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Carroll and Wade Light, two sisters Wilma Campbell and Stella Hignight, and one grandson Russell Reynolds.

The family would like to thank the Staff at Hospice House for the loving care shown to our wife, mother, motherinlaw, and grandmother, and to all the family and friends that were there. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please make a donation to Odessa Hospice House, your church or the charity of your choice.
