Marian Jones

June 5, 1926 — September 28, 2009

Marian Hughes Jones, born June 5, 1926 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Richard and Maude Dott Hughes, passed away September 28, 2009 in Odessa, Texas. She graduated from Tulsas Central High School in 1943 and Wellesley College near Boston, Massachusetts, in 1947, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in geology.

Upon graduation, Marian worked for Stanolind Oil and Gas Company in the Tulsa office geological library. She met Charles E. Jones, Jr. in 1946, and they were married January 7, 1950, in Tulsa at the Hughess home before establishing lifetime residence in Odessa.

Marians passions included extensive community activity, support for the arts, and travel. Organizations benefitting from that passion and involvement included the League of Women Voters, Midland-Odessa Symphony and Chorale Board of Directors, Junior League of Odessa, Odessa Regional Hospital Auxiliary, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Advisory Board, Ellen Noel Art Museum, Interfaith Service Sewing, PTA, and the Odessa Music Club among others.

Some of her most dedicated times were volunteering as chairman of and hosting young musicians for The Young Artists Competition and serving as president of the Crystal Ball Foundation. A member of First Presbyterian Church for sixty years, Marian taught Sunday school, participated in Presbyterian Women, served as an elder, and helped with missions locally and globally. Mission trips to Costa Rica were highlights of that service. She was a leader of her daughters Girl Scout troops, a board member of the local council, and honored by the Permian Basin Girl Scout Council as a Woman of Distinction.

She traveled extensively in Europe, Central America, Canada, and Cuba, as well as her favorite destinations, New York City and Boston. The last New York trip was especially memorable as Marians traveling companions were her three daughters.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Keith David Bingham, Jr. and son-in-law, Bob Lowe. Surviving family include her husband, sister-in-law Rosemary Smith, daughter Barbara Jones Bingham and husband Keith, daughter Margaret Jones Lowe Wheatley and husband Russell, daughter Catherine Jones Miller and husband Gregg; six grandsons, David and Grant Bingham, Jonathan Lowe, Geoffrey, Ian, and Preston Miller, and other extended family.

Services will be at First Presbyterian Church, Odessa, with the Reverend Steve Schorr and Pastor Greg Hagelstein officiating on October 1, 2009 at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at 4:30 PM at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
