Nell was a small-framed woman with a huge heart for others! She had unbounded energy and loved to entertain. Cooking for others, often to excess, was a favorite thing of hers. There was always more than enough food at every meal for an extra mouth or two that may show up. She was known for her kindness and generosity. Even late in life, she would bake cakes for people she loved and appreciated regardless of whether you were the President of the Chamber of Commerce, her dentist, or a friend. If you ever got a cake, you've felt this love and appreciation.
She was also the youngest of seven siblings and the only daughter raised on what could best be described as a "sharecropper's ranch" near Rocky Point, Texas, just north of Stephenville. She loved her over-protective brothers with a love only a baby sister could have. But she met the love of her life (more than her brothers) at a USO dance when she was fifteen years old. They became lifelong best friends and later husband and wife. Together over seventy-five years she never loved anyone greater than AL save Christ. She was a Proverbs 31 woman to him in every way.
Growing up with older brothers served her well working 30 years for Sun Oil Company. She loved "her engineers" like she loved her brothers save one, a very special one, Rita Monroe, who she loved with a special bond as a daughter. Rita remains part of our family. As you can tell, Nell made meaningful friendships that lasted very long. I think it was because of her undying loyalty to those she loved and her faith. Some may call it a divine gift.
Away from work she and AL helped plant new churches, took meals to the homebound, and worked tirelessly with the Order of the Eastern Star (OES). Her favorite OES times were working her way through the star points and ultimately serving several times as Worthy Matron and once as Grand Ruth. She and AL wove their lives of service together to become a single life just like scripture describes.
Perhaps her greatest jewels rested with her grandchildren who always caused a sparkle in her eyes. Casi and Sandra by birth and Paul, Adam, and Caleb by marriage all held a specially reserved place in her heart.
“Mother lived her faith with every breath she took. She finished the race."
