Mary Nell Rose Young of Odessa, Texas, celebrated her glorious reunion with Jesus on Thursday, February 23, 2023.
Mary Nell was born November 16,1935, in Hill County, Texas. She was born at home before the doctor could get there. Her birth was never recorded or documented.
She was the 12th child of 13 children, born to John Riley Rose and Mary Elizabeth McDonald Rose.
In her early childhood years, her family moved to Brownfield, Texas, where she attended school through the 10th grade. While attending school she was active in baseball. It was her favorite sport, and she was an avid supporter of the Astros.
Mary Nell met and married Warren Houston Young, after a long courtship of three months on November 22, 1957. Around this time, she worked for the Furr’s Supermarket and Warren worked for Western Pipe in Brownfield. Warren was offered a position with El Paso Natural Gas in Denver City.
After Warren’s promotion, the family moved to the middle of nowhere, Goldsmith, Texas.
Mary Nell played on the El Paso Dixie Dolls softball team, as well as a Sunday school teacher, boy scout leader, fundraiser for St. Jude Hospital, and a Methodist Youth Fellowship sponsor.
When something needed to be done, Mary Nell was always ready to be involved. We don’t know how many times the church was painted.
Mary Nell’s most proud role was being a wife to Warren and a mom to her four children.
She was the cook, dishwasher, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budget planner, seamstress, disciplinarian, cheerleader and chauffer.
After 25 years of living in Goldsmith, Warren retired and they moved to Whitney, Texas, where she was born. While living in Whitney, she was a member of the King Memorial Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing Skip-Bo, riding in the boat and watching Warren fish.
The next move brought them back to West Texas, due to the beginning of Warren’s health issues. She spent the next 23 years in Odessa, where she began enjoying her great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her faithful husband of 63 years, Warren Houston Young; parents, John Riley and Mary Elizabeth Rose; all her siblings, Gladys Keener, John Riley Rose, Hershal Rose, Inez Turner, Irene Brown, Edd Rose, Nina DePoyster, Faye Warren, Donald Rose, Christine Purvis, Mark Rose and the last one, Robert Rose. Yep, count them, 13! And her daughter in Law, Charla Brown Young.
She is survived by her children, Linda Young Anglley, Rick Young, Michael Young, Sherry Young Denny and her partner Jim Gilbert. She had 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful for the calls, prayer and support during this time.
The family would also like to thank Medical Center Hospital, Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Home Hospice, Madison Medical Resort, especially KK and Jacob.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude Children Hospital in appreciation.
