Maurice John Jones
To sum up someones life in just a few short paragraphs doesnt seem to do justice to them, especially my dad. However, Ill let you know the high spots from my point of view.
He was born to John and Elva Jones on November 10, 1930 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was an accomplished athlete and musician through high school, and moved to Hardin Simmons University to join the Cowboy Band. Anyone associated with that organization knows what that means. His friendships were lifelong and unwavering. Right after they graduated, he married my mom, Joyce Chapman Jones on August 9, 1952 and away they went.
After spending time teaching in Floydada, they moved to Odessa in the late 50s and he went to work in the music business helping directors and students get what they needed. He stayed in and around that profession until he retired from Caldwell Music Company in 1992. He was a Mason and Shriner, and had the honor of being a Past Master of the Andy G. Vaughn Lodge. He was also a member of the Odessa Chuckwagon Gang, traveling around the country and world with that group. That was some of the factual stuff, now let me tell you about what I think really counts.
I was born in 1964, and I can remember when my dad taught me to hunt, fish, and to play golf. He coached my baseball team and my football team. He attended all of my school programs. He took me camping, took me to church, took me to early band rehearsals, and was a sponsor on band trips. He paid for my college, helped me get a job, helped me take over his position when he retired, and eventually helped me start two successful companies. Not only that, my mom died in 1994, so in 1997 when Aaron was born, he became a single grandparent and got to start it all over again. Collin was born in 2003 and Jordyn in 2006, and up until last Saturday, he was still playing with his grandkids whenever he could. Tough act to follow.
He was a born again Christian and attended First Baptist Church in Odessa for many years. He and my mom are now rejoicing together again.
Graveside services, with Masonic Rites are scheduled for 9:00 AM Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
