Maye M. Godwin, age 95, died on September 30, 2011, at Hospice House in Odessa, Texas.
Maye, or Mamaw as she was known to many, was born April 8, 1916 to William Jackson Coker, and Maye Suzanna Cadenhead Coker in Albany, Texas. She was one of ten children.
She was raised in Lubbock, Texas and graduated from Lubbock High School when there were only eleven grades. She was a cheerleader and participated in gymnastics.
She met her future husband while they were performing in a play to raise money for the Methodist Church. She and Lewis Godwin eloped to Portales, New Mexico, because she was only seventeen years old. They were married on October 1, 1933 but their marriage was kept secret for several weeks. Maye and Lewis had four children , Max Godwin, Phillip Godwin, Lewis Godwin, Jr. and Kay Godwin Kennedy. Because Maye , who was raised a Baptist, married a Methodist, all four of the children were raised in the Methodist Church.
She and Lewis lived all over the western United States during the Depression trying to
scrape out a living for themselves and the children. Over the years they owned and ran both a furniture store and motel in Ranger, Texas. They also operated a motel in San Angelo. Finally, they settled down in Odessa in 1955, where they owned and ran Godwin Carpet on 8th Street. Maye continued to run the carpet store after Lewis died in 1979. She closed the store and retired at the age of 76 in 1992.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and five brothers, her husband, Lewis Godwin, Sr., her son Max Godwin and his first wife, Patricia, her son Lewis Godwin, Jr. and his wife Rebecca, and a greatgranddaughter, Jessica Dubberly.
Maye is survived by one brother, Harry Kimbrell Fry of Grand Prairie, Texas, her son Phillip Godwin and his wife, Patty, her beloved daughter, Kay Kennedy, all of Odessa, her daughtersinlaw, Jean Godwin of San Angelo, Texas, and Glenette Godwin of Arizona 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
