Mildred Maxwell, age 92, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010 in Midland.
Mildred Louise Boyd was born in Valera, Texas, Coleman County to Martin Luther Boyd and Laura Louise DeBouse Boyd. Her early years were spent on the family ranch while attending Mosell schools. She married Curtis Clinton Maxwell in 1933. The happy union added Juanell, Leona Louise, Glenn Edward and Norma Joyce.
The family were founding members of First Church of God in Odessa where she taught Sunday school for 30 years and sang in the choir for 40 years. More recently, Mildred helped found CrossWay Church in Midland, where she attended before moving to Manor Park.
Mildred worked many years for JC Penney in Odessa. In her midlife, she volunteered her time to teach sewing on the southside of Odessa. In her widowhood, she began a second career as an awardwinning artist and taught art classes in her church. Her paintings reflected her childhood memories of the Texas landscape and won numerous awards and accolades.
Mildred was a devoted and loving wife an attentive mother an inspirational aunt a faithful sisterinlaw a wonderful grandmother, greatgrandmother and greatgreat grandmother. Succinctly, she was the Proverbs woman.
Mildred was predeceased by her husband, Curtis Clinton Maxwell, her children Juanell Coats, Leona Louise Nichols and Glenn Edward Maxwell and two grandchildren, Randall Coats and David James Coats.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Norma Joyce Dyer and soninlaw Louis K. Sonny Dyer and her sonsinlaw, J. Waylon Nick Nichols and James Preston Coats. In addition, she leaves her grandchildren, Laura Satterfield and husband, Craig, Cathy Kelton and husband, Sam, George Coats, David Nichols, Ramon Nichols, Jenny James and husband, Gerald, Curtis Dyer and wife, Chandra, and Clint Maxwell. She had fifteen greatgrandchildren and 9 greatgreat grandchildren.
Visitation with the family will be 68 PM Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Friday, March 12, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Rhonda Thornhill officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Sam Kelton, David Nichols, Ramon Nichols, Curtis Dyer, Craig Satterfield, Micah, Jim Atkerson and Matt Kelton.
